Valentine’s Day, also known as Single Appreciation Day, is a holiday primarilycelebrated in the United States. It can either be a wonderfully romantic day to spend with your significant other, or if you’re slightly less fortunate, you can always hang out with cheap chocolates and the ultimate loves of your life – pizza and your laptop. Here are some tips to enjoy Valentine’s Day, categorized by your relationship status.

Do you have a significant other?
  • get them a gift!
    • are you lazy? pressed for time?
      • stick with the traditional heart-shaped box chocolates!
      • please make sure they’re not expired… you wouldn’t want to be responsible for food poisoning.
    • is this your first Valentine’s Day together? do you want to devote more effort?
      • get something special! It doesn’t have to be overly expensive. It’s better to get a simple gift that only you would get for them, because this is a clear demonstration that you’ve put a lot of thought – not money – into getting a gift to celebrate this special day.
  • write a letter!
    • want it short and sweet?
      • tell them how they brighten up your life!
      • thank them for everything they’ve done for you.
    • want it to resemble a Master’s thesis?
      • list 100 reasons why they make you happy!
      • then proceed to describe every single memory you’ve ever shared with them.
  • go on a date!
    • this should be pretty self-explanatory…

A Valentine’s Day Letter

Are you single?
  • get yourself a gift!
    • you’ve struggled through the woes of being the only single one in your friend group! Third wheels (or seventh wheels, depending on the situation) deserve a huge round of applause! Pile up your shopping cart with all the chocolates your heart desires. Who says somebody else has to get them for you? You are the master of your destiny.
  • order a pizza!
    • get that XL pizza you are normally too poor to buy. Have a dinner for two, but just with you! And all your stuffed animals.
  • kick back in bed with your pizza, chocolates, and your laptop!
    • turn on your favorite Netflix show and remember that you honestly got the easy way out of the day. You didn’t have to get dressed, or buy someone a ridiculous gift, or share any of your food! Sounds like a win-win to me.

Netflix and Cookies

Is it complicated?
  • throw all caution to the winds!
    • don’t be complicated. Enjoy your day to the fullest, and it’s up to them if they want to join your fun.
  • give them a chance!
    • if you’re thinking about them on Valentine’s Day, most likely they’re thinking about you as well.

Regardless of your relationship status, Valentine’s Day is one of the few holidays that you’re truly supposed to enjoy with no other commitments. There aren’t any pressures typically associated with the day, so relax and live in the moment. Love others and love yourself.
