In the Spotlight

Spotlight memories have a mind of their own,

Sometimes they are rather unknown.

Before the time I could understand,

The memories were already grand.

Like a beam of light that picks a memory,

With that, I receive new-found energy.

The light will shine in your head,

But the spotlight will dim, and memories will blend.

An abundance of memories I will make,

But I know one day, they will fade.

Preschool

This year was the very first,

I was so excited I was about to burst.

I played with many dolls and other toys,

Our class sure made a lot of noise.

I really enjoyed the dishwashing station,

With sponges and soap, I made many creations.

As the fun-filled year began to end,

I realize what fun I had with my friends.

An abundance of memories I had made,

But I know soon they will begin to fade.

Kindergarten

It was time to move to a brand new place,

A bit before I could tie my own shoelace.

I learned my very first colors that year,

We learned the word “because” with a huge cheer.

Our class had two teddy bears named Lucky and Buddy,

And both of them were very cuddly.

Those were memories that stood out from the rest,

I remember them the very best.

An abundance of memories I had made,

But I know soon they will begin to fade.

First Grade

The next year came rather quickly,

I remember my last teacher very dearly.

To a new classroom and teacher I would go,

With chapter books and paragraphs she helped me to grow.

I was in a play called “Character Matters”,

We all tried to be the best actors.

Our field trip was to a place called the Kellogg House,

And when we all wore old clothes, I chose a blouse.

An abundance of memories I had made,

But I know soon they will begin to fade.

Second Grade

Seeing my new class filled me with great glee,

What a great year it proved to be.

Our class had a money system but it was fake,

Still, we earned prizes from how much we made.

It was the year that many friends left,

And there are some things that I still regret.

I’ll remember both the good and the bad.

For the memories I made I was quite glad.

An abundance of memories I had made,

But I know soon they will begin to fade.

Third Grade

It was the first year in the portables,

But at first, it wasn’t very enjoyable.

That year, my hopes came true,

I finally learnedcursive, woohoo!

With friends new and old,

I waited for stories to unfold.

What fun we had, but the final year for some,

So, I was obviously bummed.

An abundance of memories I had made,

But I know soon they will begin to fade.

Fourth Grade

An upper grader I longed to become,

I was quite excited for the years to come.

My second year with the teacher who had a big bookcase,

There were many times we embraced.

Science Lab, a brand new thing,

What great fun it could bring.

Two more friends had to go,

Disappointment I tried not to show.

An abundance of memories I had made,

But I know soon they will begin to fade.

Fifth Grade

This was the year where I started creative writing,

It was definitely very exciting.

Ravenclaw was the Harry Potter  house I was in,

What a great team we had been.

I sang songs every morning with the class,

A very interesting year, at last!

My enthusiastic teacher, I’ll never forget,

The most musical teacher I’d ever met.

An abundance of memories I had made,

But I know soon they will begin to fade.

Sixth Grade

My last teacher, a tall woman with many talents,

With photos and lights, the room was very balanced.

Outdoor Ed, the excitement to many,

Memories and thoughts; there were plenty.

Quite unfortunately, it was another friend’s last stay,

Her leaving was to mydismay.

I wonder what I will experience,

What will happen? I’m very curious.

An abundance of memories I had made,

But I know soon they will begin to fade.

The End

After this year, I’ll be done with sixth grade,

But I’ve been at school for less than a decade.

Surely many years have passed,

Yet moving on will always last.

Though this adventure has now ceased,

I’ll remember these years; for it’s like a puzzle piece.

I can’t ever just click delete,

Since without it I will feel incomplete.

An abundance of memories I have made,

But I know soon they will begin to fade.

Discussion Questions:

  1. This is a poem I wrote based on the memories I had at school until 6th grade. If you had to write a poem about elementary school, what would you write about?
  2. What are your favorite memories from elementary school? Least favorite ones?
  3. Is there anything you regret from these years?
