4 – Wishes Reversed

Millie ran and ran toward the well. It was all her fault! The well had warned her to be careful, but everything had gone wrong all because of her.

She ran up to the iron door and whipped it open. “I want to reverse the wishes.”

Nothing happened. Was something wrong? “I WANT TO REVERSE THE WISHES!”

Again, all was still. Shadow nudged her leg with flowering dogwoods in her mouth.

“Of course,” Millie said.

She hurriedly placed the flowers on the ledge of the well. “I want to reverse the wishes.”

For a moment, Millie worried that it hadn’t worked, but soon a vibrant glow encircled Millie and Shadow. Had it really worked?

“Only one way to find out,” Millie said.

She raced back to the palace.

“Millie!” Queen Klaire called from the palace doors. “It’s nearly time for dinner, where have you been the whole day?”

Millie crossed her fingers in hope. “Are Cole and Hailey alright?”

“What do you mean?” Her mother stared at her in confusion. “Of course they’re alright.”

Millie sighed in relief. “Thank goodness.”

She headed in for dinner but was stopped by her mother.

“Why is that cat following you in? I thought I had made it very clear that no pets are allowed in the palace.”

Oh, right. Both wishes had to be reversed.

“Oops,” Millie said. “See you tomorrow, Shadow.”

Shadow purred softly, then scampered off toward the garden.

As she and her mother headed inside, she realized that everything had a reason. Pets would cause too much chaos, and her friends had responsibilities to take care of their siblings.

Millie gave her mother a big hug. “Thank you.”

Queen Klaire looked confused but hugged her back. “Of course.”

Millie considered what had happened in the afternoon. If she was given another chance, would she wish to change anything else?

Then, she made her decision.

“No,” Millie said. “I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why might have Millie felt lonely in the palace?
  2. What was the “cursed” part of the wishing well when someone wishes for things?
  3. What made Millie reverse the wishes near the end of the story? What did Millie realize that made her say she wouldn’t change anything about her life?
